For those who know the Belgian Ardennes: the French Ardennes have a totally different atmosphere. The French are totally aware of this natural treasure, proclaiming it the “Ardennes Vert” (green Ardennes), also in the sense of a protected landscape.
You can find 12th-century chapels, here and there surprising panoramas of extensive hilly country, typical of the Thiérache where land consolidation has not damaged the intimacy of the landscape.
The villages are stringed together by a huge number of country roads. Nightfall brings a silence comparable to that of the 1950s.
